When I was a child, my brothers and I would enjoy taking our toy trucks, tractors, and construction equipment outside to carve into the dirt in our backyard to make roads, tunnels, bridges, and much more. Much to our mother’s dismay, most of our projects ended up with a water feature of some type and we would end up not only dirty, but muddy as well, requiring us to hose off before we could come back into the house. As an adult, I enjoy watching trained professionals manipulate and control powerful equipment for construction. One of my brothers worked for a company that sold and rented out construction cranes of all sizes and I was fascinated by the stories he told of the cranes being used for various functions. A number of years ago, I purchased a Construction Simulator game and enjoyed it for a bit before it got old. However, I recently have had a chance to play the latest Construction Simulator: Gold Edition and wanted to share my thoughts on the game.

What is Construction Simulator: Gold Edition?

Construction Simulator: Gold Edition is a simulation game where players take control of all types of construction equipment including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, road pavers, trucks and many more. Construction Simulator: Gold Edition was developed by weltenbauer Software Entwicklung GmbH and published by astragon Entertainment.

Construction Simulator: Gold Edition is available for PC through Steam as well as for the XBox one, XBox Series X/S,  PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.  The PC version of the game sells for $44.99 while the console versions are $49.99. The original game is also now available for free for PlayStation Plus Premium or PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers within their Game Catalog!

Construction Simulator: Gold Edition Features

When you first begin playing, Construction Simulator: Gold Editionyou first create a character and can customize their features. You then get to choose which part of the world you will be working. You can choose from towns in Europe or the United States, or work at a space port in South America. The later is for advanced players and those new to the game are encouraged to start off in the other two locations which feature tutorials. In these tutorials, you start off working for a construction manager who helps you learn the ropes of operating equipment and completing jobs. By the end of the tutorial you have your own small construction company. You can now take individual jobs to earn money and build up your company or take on contacts which are like campaigns where you complete a number of jobs in sequence. Your company starts off with a flatbed truck with a small crane attached to it. Since you don’t have enough money to purchase the equipment you need at the start, you will need to rent equipment from the vehicle dealer. As you complete jobs and earn money, you can grow your company and purchase your own equipment.

Construction Simulator was originally released in September of 2022. However, Construction Simulator: Gold Edition was released in April of 2024 and includes the original game, all of the expansions from the Season One Pass, and the Kramer Pack. Let’s take a look at what the Gold Edition adds to the original game:

  • Spaceport Expansion: Opens access to a South American map and huge campaigns to build a rocket launch base, including the associated infrastructure and a futuristic research center.
  • Airfield Expansion: Adds a new campaign to the US as well as the European map of the game – the construction of an airfield.
  • JCB Pack: Brings 6 construction machines from the British manufacturer into the game.
  • SANY Pack: Provides access to 15 machines from the Chinese manufacturer.
  • Kramer Pack: Provides access to 3 machines from the German manufacturer.
  • Cosmetic Pack : Provides access to two additional safety goggles, helmets and ear protection items for the player character.
  • Cosmetic Pack : Adds six additional designs for the player characters’ helmets in the character editor.
  • Year 1 Season Pass Helmet: Exclusive helmet for owners of the Year 1 Season Pass.

There are over 200 construction jobs available between the three different maps, providing more than 150 hours of playtime.  Construction Simulator: Gold Edition has more than 100 officially licensed vehicles, machines and equipment from 28 world-renowned brands and manufacturers as well as cooperative multiplayer for up to 4 players.

I really enjoyed building a bridge across a river. It involved drilling and a lot of crane work. Image courtesy of astragon Games.

Why Should You Play Construction Simulator: Gold Edition?

I like playing some types of simulators. I especially enjoy train, flight, and farm simulators. My first experience with a construction simulator was lackluster. However, when I was offered an opportunity to try out Construction Simulator: Gold Edition, I was willing to give it another chance. I am glad I did. Since you have to use several different types of equipment, their are several different types of control schemes. Operating a crane uses different controls than an excavator or a bulldozer. Plus driving a vehicle is different depending on if it has wheels or tracks. Fortunately, the tutorials walk the player through how to use the equipment. Plus instructions are easily available at the press of a button to remind you of the controls. In addition to just operating equipment, you also need to maintain your companies budget. When working on a job with several steps, you will get paid once each step is completed. However, in addition to renting equipment, you also need to purchase materials. Going to get concrete or asphalt will cost you as well wooden frames and steel. Then you also have to transport your equipment and materials to the job site. Some of your equipment will need to be loaded onto a tractor trailer while your flatbed can handle most of the materials for the early jobs. For those who do not want to do a lot of driving around, you can use the fast travel feature to instantly move  your vehicles, though you will pay for the convenience. You can also reload some types of equipment onsite for a price. When laying asphalt, for example, rather than having to take a dump truck to pick it up where you purchase materials. You would have to pay for the asphalt when you picked it up, it is just a bit more expensive to have it instantly added to your road laying machine. If you find yourself having difficulty on a task for a job, you can skip it. Though you do not get paid as much for that step, it is completed instantly. Excavating can take longer time for me since the controls a one of the more difficult. So if I need to excavate a large area, I will sometime skip that task. This is a nice feature so you don’t get stuck doing a task you don’t enjoy or find difficult.

The airfield expansion is included with the Gold Edition. This is a fun job. Image courtesy of astragon Games.

The campaign contracts really add a lot to Construction Simulator: Gold Edition. As you complete the individual jobs, you build up a part of the city or facility. Once you have finished one job, you then unlock the next job and by the end can take pride in your work and how it has made an improvement to the map. Players can also choose to take individual jobs such as repairing a road or constructing a house for some extra money and to get practice on small tasks before taking on the larger jobs. The game also includes a reward system that unlocks new features for your company and its home base. For example, as you refuel and repair your equipment at the gas station, eventually you can unlock fueling and repair features at your home base. By completing jobs and earning money, banks will offer you loans so you can purchase some of that expensive equipment before you have enough money in your account.

excavator and other construction equipment
Up to four players can work cooperatively in the multiplayer game. Image courtesy of astragon Games.

Construction Simulator: Gold Edition is not the end of the content. In fact, a Season Two Pass is currently available which will add more equipment and jobs over the course of the year. Recently, the Liebherr Pack was released which adds six new machines from Liebherr. The Stadium Pack is also now available which adds a new contract to the European map where you are hired to construct a sports stadium along with all of its infrastructure such as a parking garage and pedestrian bridge. I have been playing Construction Simulator: Gold Edition for a few months. I keep wanting to complete another job before I wrote this review and even while in the process of writing, as I would go back into the game to check on something, I would end up playing for an hour or more. Though originally skeptical, I am very impressed with Construction Simulator: Gold Edition. It is a game you can quickly get into and play for as little or a much as you want at a time. I find it relaxing to play after a day at work when I don’t want to be competitive or get attacked by other players. The multiplayer feature can be a lot of fun as well as players divide up tasks. Having someone else drive a truck to pick up supplies or work on another part of the task makes jobs go by quicker. If you are fascinated by heavy machinery and would like to virtually operate them without putting yourself or others at risk, then I recommend Construction Simulator: Gold Edition. There is so much content that you will definitely get your money’s worth.

Construction Simulator: Gold Edition is currently  available for PC through Steam and is also available for XBox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5.

Video gaming and geeks go hand in hand. I’m betting lots of us got and gave video gaming goodness to our loved ones for whichever holiday we celebrated in December. I know my son and I spent a lot of our downtime between Christmas and his return to school from winter break slaying bad guys, using hats in unique new ways, and even entering entire new realms we’ve never visited before.

The writers at GeekDad are no exception, often playing video games and even sometimes writing about them. Let’s take a look at what we played this past week and some of the recent articles we’ve written.

Re-Spawn PC Gaming Central. This is where it all happens.

Welcome to PC video game news for week 2 of 2018. I’m looking forward to all the new games that will release in 2018. In my humblest of opinions, the last few months of game releases were pretty disappointing. Other than the actual release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which had been in pre-release all this time nothing really made me go “oooooh, I gotta try that!” All of the games I picked up for my son for Christmas were older games that he just hadn’t gotten around to playing yet. I’m hoping 2018 is a bit better for good new games all year long.

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

Stream and YouTube Help

I’ve seen this maneuver in a couple streams on Twitch that I watch but this video breaks it down nicely. One of the biggest challenges for me is being able to snipe without getting jumped by someone else in the process. The premise is you jump into a treetop from a high point and crouch down until someone comes into sight. Then you pop up, snipe them, and duck back down.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

Be Open About Your Skill Level, But Don’t Sell Yourself Short

I believe I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m quite new to FPS style games. When I’m trying to get into squads I’m extremely open about my lack of experience. But I always tell them that I’m getting better each time I play and that I’m open to suggestions as I play to improve. I then clarify that I’m not open to being told what to do all the time, though. We all need to find the style and strategies that work for us and I’ve found some people really want you to do exactly what they would do in situations which doesn’t work for me. This is especially prevalent when your teammate is killed early and is spectating you.

Don’t hesitate to ask your team to please let you know if they spot something but to let you decide how to react if they’re doing this to you. And please don’t do this to other people. Suggestions are fine but in the heat of a tense fight, it can be very distracting to have people in your ear telling you what to do. I’ll work hard not to do that myself. I’ll just alert them to what I see and if they seem to be floundering a bit I’ll suggest something. This is how we arrive at my most frequent advice to people I’m spectating which is “maybe throw a ‘nade?” I do this myself in crazy moments, forgetting to use my grenades so it is a handy suggestion to me when I’m in a tough spot.

Call Out Before Engaging

I’m basing this one off of a mistake I made in a match just last night. I was in a game with GeekDad Randy Slavey and some random folks. We were in a larger area on Sosnovka Island called Novorepnoye. We’d seen only one other squad land in the area and hadn’t run into any of them yet. I was crossing from one section of buildings to another and spotted a lone person in one of the garages. I was close and he wasn’t paying attention. Without thinking I shot him with my shotgun. I downed him but his team was a lot closer than I knew and were on me before I could even explain to my team what was going on. One of my teammates ran in to help and we both got killed. Not good on my part. I had the easy shots but I put the entire squad at risk by not giving them a chance to move in before I engaged.

The Biggest Enemy Is the Circle

Always remember your primary enemy is the circle. Especially when you’re constantly chasing it on the new map, Miramar. That map is huge and it takes a long time to cross areas so you’ll need to keep moving steadily if you land far from the circle or you’ll die horribly in 4th place just a few feet from the circle. Like me. Last night.

Stream and YouTube Help

WackyJacky101 continues to post solid tutorials and explanatory videos on Youtube. I loved his video on using the VSS built-in scope and I continue to keep the VSS often when I find it because I do so well with the scope now.

I previously shared his video on spray patterns which was very informative. This next video, though, breaks down recoil of all the assault rifles, fully kitted, as one would expect to be by the middle to the end of the match. I learned from this that M416 has the least recoil overall, with such little horizontal that if you simply drag your mouse downward while burst firing you should be annihilating your enemies. And though the Groza appears to have high recoil once you take into consideration the number of bullets being fired in the bursts and how the first set and last set behave you can also control spray very well by again pulling mouse downward during the burst firing of the first 10 or so. And no one is surprised at all to find the Aug has near perfect horizontal recoil.

D3 Anniversary Event
D3 Anniversary Event

This announcement is actually from a couple weeks ago but I was off for the holidays when it landed. With the anniversary of Diablo came a special in-game even called the Darkening of Tristram. This event lets players of Diablo III step into the past and explore a special dungeon adventure that will look ever so familiar to those that played the previous versions of the game.

It comes with exclusive rewards and challenges and is available until January 30th.

Overwatch

Season 8 of competitive play has started in Overwatch and it comes with a few changes. There are new competitive rewards like sprays and player icons and players who land in the top 500 in their platform and region will get a second spray and icon.

There are changes to the skill rating variances for determining who plays whom in each match. This should level out the skill levels a bit for those in the lower rankings and the higher. They’ve also removed adjustments to SR for Diamond tier and above in the hopes that it will force a more team win dynamic in the higher tier matches.

The test server now randomizes which map you get as of this week. I was able to play both maps on the test servers and I liked being able to use the vaulting/climbing skill on the old map. It is good preparation for the 1.0 release later this month. December 20th is still the date as of this article and the test servers will stay up until the move of the changes to the production servers.

Use the Rooftops

Most of the areas in Miramar have at least one path to the rooftops. These are excellent places to stop, drop, and scope. This is especially true in the trailer park areas or areas with a lot of small buildings clustered together. Many of these areas have ramps and paths to the other roofs and the edges and corners will have some metal and rocks to crouch behind when you get into a gunfight.

We asked and we received. The option to earn cosmetics by playing the game is here with Battle Pass. New for Season 2, you can either buy the Battle Pass or grind to get the cosmetics you want.

The Holiday Event is now live, featuring awesome holiday skins, holiday-themed landscaping (though no snow), Christmas trees with loot chests underneath, and of course the snowball launcher!

I had to link this video from Dakotaz. He walks us through the items you can purchase with the Battle Pass and shows us some clips of gameplay with the new changes. If nothing else, Dakotaz’s enthusiasm is so fun to witness.

Fortnite Save the World

Both flavors of Fortnite have a holiday-themed update this week. In Save the World we get to experience new enemies, snow-covered areas, and new and clever weapons. Even more exciting to me are the changes to the inventory screen and the addition of mini-bosses. There was a brief update video followed by a very long developer stream, both are linked below.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Latest Video Game News

The game is expected to be released as 1.0 version on December 20th. Otherwise, not much has changed for PUBG week to week, at least not for PC. I hear the Xbox release has been less than stellar but I haven’t tried it out on console yet.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

Sam's Best Miramar Match... so far.
Sam’s Best Miramar Match… so far.

After playing 6 matches this weekend on the new map I can tell you the trucks are so much easier to drive than other vehicles and can handle the rougher terrain better than the others. I have not yet had occasion to try out the Aquarail. The van is fun but horrible to handle and cannot take steep inclines at all.

Vaulting and the ability to climb is key in Miramar, the new map. I urge caution, though, as most players are just going in/out of windows instead of using doors so it makes it a bit harder to tell when a spot is looted or not.

Specific to Miramar, Stay on the Move

The map is way too large and there are too many height variations to try to camp out in one spot for very long. I found I loved this change as I don’t have the patience to sit and wait for enemies to find me. This map pretty much forces you to move so you’ll quickly become better at looking for and spotting enemies as you move as well as get to work out those vaulting and climbing skills.

Find a Vehicle and Keep it.

Once you find a vehicle, do your best to keep it. Unless you’re down to the final 10 when the circle is closing at small variances you WILL need a vehicle on this map. It is just too large. Thankfully there are a lot of them, though they can be hard to spot from the air thanks to the strategically heaped garbage bags that look exactly like vehicles as you are dropping onto the map. There are also a lot more gas can spawns, or so it seemed to me.  I would come across 5 or 6 in each little housing cluster I looted.

Stop, Drop, and Scope

The map is huge and the detail level intense. When you find cover, stop, crouch or go prone, and use your scope to scout around you before moving again. I play in the third-person perspective and even the ability to “look around” while running wasn’t good enough when I played. I missed several people that way but spotted them instantly when I used my scope. Mainly because people are still wearing their dark gear which shows up immediately against the brown muted terrain of the new map.

Fortnite Battle Royale New Mode – 50 v 50

What sounds like a really fun concept is sadly not really turning into one that’s fun to play or watch. I have watched 15 streamer videos and every single one of them is their squad trying to get the best loot, capitalize on teammates in trouble to up their own kill count, and running right past downed teammates and not even resurrecting them. If I sound a little miffed, I am. Epic Games created a play mode with such great potential to expand on the teamwork mentality that makes Fortnite Battle Royale so very cool and no one seems to care, they just want to exploit it to up their ranks. Pathetic. As such, I’m not sharing any streamer/creator videos as I found none worth watching.

I have a couple more videos this week from thatdenverguy on YouTube. I shared his “9 Common Mistakes New Players Make – Fortnite Battle Royale | Tips and Tricks” last week. I loved that video so much I hit up his channel directly and I wasn’t disappointed. I absolutely love his teacher approach to this. He shows us how to do it while telling us how and why in very clear steps. And he plays with his little brother, how sweet is that?

In the first video “TOP 4 UNKNOWN Places to Land for LOOT and EASY WINS (Fortnite Battle Royale) | Tips and Tricks” he actually walks you through several loot lanes, or paths he likes to take to gear up at the start of matches.

The second video “FORTNITE Battle Royale – 19 THINGS you STILL Don’t Know | Tips and Tricks” has some great tips on fort building. I’ll totally be using the tip of setting up my go to versions of each build type while I’m waiting for the Battle Bus to launch.

Do you have some Fortnite Battle Royale tips to share? Hit us up in the comments, share them on Facebook with us, or give me a shout on Twitter, @samanthafisher. I’d love to reshare your tips with the GeekDad followers.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

Be Open to Random Squads

I am relatively new to FPS games. I’m a bit bummed that I assumed I wouldn’t like them for so long and didn’t play them until mid-2017 because I absolutely love them. Sadly, I’m not very good at them yet. I’m getting better but slowly and I have a hard time finding good squads to play with. So my first tip is to be open to random groups and squads. Yes, you can get some duds but I’ve actually bumped into several really nice and helpful squadmates by doing this.

Don’t Be Afraid to Tell Your Teammate to Move

I had the better gun with a 4x scope in a recent duo match. We were on the third floor and spotted another duo on the roof of a lower house nearby. I realized after the fact I totally should have told my teammate to move. He was in front the window with the better spot and moving around so I went to a side window where I could only see one of the two people and was frankly too meek to say “could you move, I think I can get them both with that better spot and my scope.” I won’t be so shy next time.

Ask For a Location Marker

When fighting on a team and someone says “they’re right in front of us” or “to the right!” don’t hesitate to follow up with “actual location, please” and do it more than once if you need to. I try hard to give concrete location information such as “moving left to right at my 165 toward the red houses” instead of “behind you” and there’s no shame in asking for the same. Every second that you save finding the enemy makes it more likely you will live and they will not. So keep asking and make sure you keep giving good solid location information.

Stream and YouTube Help

I happened upon this neat video from WackyJacky101 this week. He uses an eye-tracking software program to show you where he’s looking while he breaches buildings with enemies hunkered down inside. He goes over the fast and furious type, the sneak approach, how to effectively use grenades (including how to use the different types) and how to combine approaches to wipe out your enemy.

I also really liked his demo on how to control spray pattern when using your assault rifles in auto mode. He has a camera on his mouse hand showing you exactly how he moves his mouse to correct and control. He shows both full sprays and burst from standing and crouching with each of the four major rifles. Tip: never try to spray with the AKM, you’re just wasting most of your bullets. Second tip: slowly pull your mouse down while spraying to exert the best amount of control.

Re-Spawn: PC Gaming News

Welcome to PC video game news for week 47. I took a couple weeks off to rest up and cover some other geeky topics important to me, but we are back with some more PC gaming news this week. I have tips for you in Fortnite Battle Royale and PUBG and lots of tasty news tidbits to feast on now that Thanksgiving is over.

Sam’s PC Video Game Tips

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

Timing the Jump

This week in Fortnite Battle Royale I made extra effort to pay attention to timing my jumps in close-quarters battles. I’m still not great at it, but by watching YouTube videos and my favorite streamers on Twitch extensively while I do other things on my PC, I’ve been able to improve some. It is a tricky bit of business timing your shots while jumping and at least for me it helps to learn the time it takes to drop from a jump and hit them as they come back down to the ground. I see better players shooting them mid-jump and in the air but I’m not good at that (yet) but the time it takes them to fall is constant so that is what I’m working on first.

Towns/Farms vs. Small Spawn Areas

The named towns, farms, and factories will, of course, have the most and often better loot. But they will also have the most people which reduces your odds of getting a good weapon early. That is key to take out others and steal all of their loot for yourself.  I find I do best when I go for the middle ground. I choose a named area that is a little later on the drop route and has some small house or building clusters nearby so that if 20 other people drop there I can veer off, get a gun or two, then head toward the main town now armed and ready to teach them what happens when they take my drop point.

In Your Face – SMG Style

As sort of an add-on to my tip about timing your jumps, I’ve found the SMG, one of the most hated guns in the game, to be way better for me in close-quarter fights than the shotgun. For me, I still get a little panicky when someone is right up in my business and so my aim gets a bit wild. With the SMG I can just be somewhere on their person and hold down the fire button. Emptying an entire clip into them can drop them if they don’t have shields and make them back up and calm the heck down a bit even if they do. Then I switch to my shotgun and try to hit them one last time.

Enough of my humble opinions, take a look at some gameplay from much better players than I.

Stream and YouTube Help

In keeping with the “tips” spirit, this week I’ll share a video from someone I haven’t come across before known as thatdenverguy on YouTube. He made “9 Common Mistakes New Players Make – Fortnite Battle Royale | Tips and Tricks” that went up on November 11th and it is a great starter guide for what not to do. If you read this article each week you’ll probably catch more than a few of my tips in it as well, but he’s got the video to show you! Check out his tips here and click his name above if you want to check out his channel on YouTube. One side-note. He mentions there are no silenced weapons in this which isn’t quite correct. There is a new silenced SMG in the game, but it is the only silenced weapon so far.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

I actually played more PUBG this week than Fortnite Battle Royale and, hold on to your butts people, I got my first chicken dinner! Special thanks to GeekDad Randy Slavey and his son (the latter of whom got the winning shot, I might add) and of course The_Loose_Moose who drew the short straw and was our random 4th in this squad game and whom I could not save the second time he went down. I tried Moose! I tried.

Height Advantage is Real

Trying to scope out (pun 100% intended) your next move or spot where some fighting is happening so you can plan what to do next? Find a house with roof access and get up there. Crouch or drop to prone if able and use your scope to carefully look around you. Maybe hide in the doorway you used to get to the roof and flick yourself out and back in the doorway to look around. Occasionally crouch so that if someone has spotted you they will expect your head to be up high but you’ll come in low.

Find the End Game Location for Your Play Style

For the end game, I don’t think I could ever win inside a house. Too many obstacles for people to duck behind for my slower reflexes and I get caught on doorframes (both in-game and out) so often it is embarrassing, so I prefer to finish it outside with trees, bushes, grass, and preferably a hill for me to be on.

Stream and YouTube Help

Choco Taco is creating some great tips based content for LevelCapGaming on YouTube. This one is from October and is a very nice breakdown of the three types of shooting. He not only demos them but talks about the pros and cons of using them, tells you when it is best to use them and how to execute them well.

Video Game News Recap

Fortnite Battle Royale

The devs dropped a new update last week that covers both things already live in the game and how they are performing as well as sharing some info on upcoming changes we should expect to see. Watch below, but I can assure you that rocket rides and launch pad gliding are here to stay. Yay! And a public test server is coming.

Fortnite

In the Fortnite PvE world, the 10th dev update dropped on the 21st and can be seen below. It covers end game content, improvements to accessing your inventory, schematic evolutions, and a winter event among other things.

Re-Spawn: PC Video Gaming News

Welcome to PC video game news for week 43. I’ve received some feedback and folks are indicating they would prefer if I separate the news and tips by platform so I’m going to give that a try. This one will be for PC games and I’ll include my tips here for the PC video games I’ve been playing lately. I’ll share any news that caught my eye as well.

Sam’s PC Video Game Tips

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

Farming

The first tip for Fortnite Battle Royale this week is to farm whenever safe to do so. Especially large trees and rock formations. Being able to quickly throw up a wall or ramp can save you in a pinch and give you a height advantage. The end game is fast turning into building a base and waiting so if you make it to the top 10 you will need plenty of resources for that so replenish as able. When you’re doing the early looting, hit chairs, tables, fireplaces, etc. as you’re on the move. No need to stop to pound down an entire wall, that just draws attention to yourself, but if you swing as you go you’ll be picking up lots of small amounts of building materials and it can really add up.

Landing

My second tip seemed to be an obvious one to me but from watching streams and observing in-game while I play it apparently isn’t that obvious. Land on a roof when you can. Most chests are in the attics so you increase your odds of quickly finding one of those plus it helps you gain materials (see above) when you hack you way in through the roof.

In Your Face

Finally, this is one that has been helping me a bit lately. Fighting in close quarters? Not the best at jump-firing with accuracy? Get right up in their face if you aren’t the best at aiming under pressure. Surprisingly, almost everyone is as terrible as me at landing a shot when I am dancing on their head, so give it a try.

Enough of my humble opinions, take a look at some gameplay from much better players than I am.

Stream and YouTube Help

In keeping with the “tips” spirit, this week I’ll share a SXVXN Top 10 video that I rather enjoyed. He shows some of his WORST gameplay clips and talks about what he did wrong and how to do it better. His channel is linked to his name if you want to check out some of his other videos.

Do you have some Fortnite Battle Royale tips to share? Hit us up in the comments, share them on Facebook with us, or give me a shout on Twitter, @samanthafisher. I’d love to reshare your tips with the GeekDad followers. Want to group up for some duo/squad action? Tag me on Twitter and we can give it a try.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

I focused my limited PC gaming time this week to Fortnite Battle Royale but I caught some good YouTube videos on PUBG that I want to share with you. StoneMountain64 makes some great pointer videos, especially for folks newer to FPS games. Below is one of his “beginner guides” which is really just him talking strategy over some of his gameplay clips. He makes sense, so give him a listen. I linked to his channel on his name above if you want to watch some of his other content.

As with any PUBG gameplay video you will hear adult language. But this one… if you only watch the opening sequence you are doing yourself a service because this is one of the most hilarious reactions to something going awry that I’ve seen yet. This guy’s laughter is irresistible. Part of the humor is in folks getting caught in something they can’t escape which usually results in some language. So skip this if you don’t like to hear it.

Overwatch

I haven’t been able to play much Overwatch this week but I love playing Junkrat and found this great tips video. People like to joke that there is no skill to Junkrat but that just isn’t true. He takes finesse to actually excel with him so catch these tips below and see how you can improve your Junkrat play.

Video Game News Recap

Fortnite

The latest developer’s update video dropped this week. In this third installment, they explain a little about how progression works, answer questions about why they remap key bindings and sensitivities with major updates (hint: it is because they are working on the best default setup and when they change that it remaps for all players), share that global leaderboards are not on the radar yet, are working on some improvements to the speed of placing traps, and though new maps are not currently a priority improvements to the current map are and they are working on those now. The goal is to add more places of interest, possibly increase the island just a tad, and to make it a little easier to spread out at the beginning.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

New Hero: Moira

The most exciting Overwatch news to me out of Blizzcon is the new support character, Moira. We have two videos about her, the first the introduction video from Blizzcon, then her origin story video below. You can also check out her hero page.

Her skills are:

  • Biotic Grasp. Moira’s left hand sends out biotic energy to heal allies in front of her while her right hand can shoot out a long-range life-sucking beam that drains her enemies while restoring her own biotic energy.
  • Biotic Orb. Choosing either regen or decay, Moira throws out a rebounding orb of biotic energy that can either heal or hurt.
  • Fade. Short and fast teleport ability.
  • Coalescence. This combines her two main abilities to heal and harm into one long-range beam so anyone it comes in contact with is healed if an ally and wounded if an enemy. This ability also pierces barriers.

Hearthstone

The new expansion Kobolds & Catacombs arrives in December. It includes:

  • Legendary Weapons will be specific to each class and vary based on their unique style and skills.
  • Unidentified Items are cards that have a static base effect but gain a mystery bonus when added to your deck.
  • Spellstones are class-specific with each class getting their own which levels up as gameplay happens.
  • New cards were announced.
    • Minions: Marin the Fox, Kobold Illusionist, Drygulch Jailor, Carnivorous Cube, ‘Rin, the First Disciple’, and Guild Recruiter
    • Legendary Weapons: Aluneth and Dragon Soul
    • Spells: Wandering Monster, Lesser Sapphire Spellstone, Lesser Jasper Spellstone, Unidentified Elixer, Crushing Walls, and Gather Your Party
  • Free Legendary Cards will be given to each player to celebrate the new expansion.

Those are the highlights for PC this week. There are of course plenty of other games out there but I want to highlight the games I know or of interest to me. Want me to include some other games? Message me on Twitter and I’ll take a look. @samanthafisher

Re-Spawn Video Game News – Samantha Fisher

Welcome to our video game news for week 43. I go back to basics in Overwatch, share four Fortnite Battle Royale tips of my own, and of course, I bring you all the best news that caught our attention at GeekDad this week in Re-Spawn.

Sam’s Video Game Tips

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

My tips this week are pretty basic ones, but they come from harsh lessons learned this week.

First, take a screenshot of your custom settings prior to any game update. I was fine resetting my custom key bindings, those I remember well, but I am still trying to fix my mouse and scope sensitivities for Fortnite Battle Royale and I’m not there yet at all.

Second, rebind your keys for building so you can do it faster. Being able to build fast and accurate is clutch in this game, so make sure you can do it without thinking. They are by default bound to the F keys and even with my extremely long fingers, I have trouble reaching the Shift button (to sprint) at the same time as F3 to build a ramp while keeping W pressed to move forward. I have a Razer Naga mouse so I mapped the 3 basic build keys from F1, F2, and F3 to 7, 8, and 9 on my mouse.

Third, do not stand still while farming materials. Most of my kills in the game come from people just standing by a tree or rock banging away with their pickaxe and I take them down so fast. When I’m farming materials I crouch and jump all while constantly circling the item. I may get hit if someone spots me but I’m way more likely to survive the hit when I do.

Finally, in keeping with tips related to making sure you can hit the buttons you need as fast as possible, I use the number buttons on the Naga to switch my weapons instead of the keyboard number keys or mouse scroll. Oh, and I immediately rebound crouch from the mouse wheel to C. So find what you can comfortably reach on your keyboard/mouse and rebind to those.

Enough of my humble opinions, take a look at some gameplay from much better players than I am.

From Dakotaz, considered one of the best in the game you have Jump Pad Victory.

And another one I enjoy watching on Twitch is CDNThe3rd and he has a new clip reel up YouTube. Fair warning, he is R rated, so if you really don’t like cursing, ad hoc rapping, nor jokes about anatomical body parts, don’t click on this one. If you find those things funny by all means, click away.

And finally, Ninja is another extremely skilled player and you can catch his latest highlights in this video. Also some cursing in this one, so be warned.

I played a few more rounds of PUBG with GeekDad Randy Slavey this week. Holy smokes am I terrible at this game. I can’t quite figure out why but I get so nervous in this one. My adrenaline is way more elevated in PUBG than in Fortnite Battle Royale and I have no idea why. I have no tips of my own, but I was checking out some YouTube videos to watch to get tips for myself and I came across this one from LevelCapGaming. I’ll try to incorporate some of this into my next matches and let you know how things go.

Overwatch

Last week I shared how I finally got back to Overwatch after many weeks of not playing. I have played a few times since, and I have to confess: I’m not as good as I was. Nowhere near as good as I was before the break. So, what’s a girl to do? Go back to the basics, that’s what. I’d used a few how-to videos on YouTube in the past to fine tune my skills and I went back to those to refresh my memory on the drills I used to do. This video from Skyline is a great one to show you some drills to work on your accuracy.

It is easy to forget that the practice range in Overwatch is a HUGE benefit to players who actually care about getting better. There are stages to the practice range, as well. Start with the close range stationary bots, then move on to the ones still stationary but farther away, then to the somewhat free range ones to the far right.

One tip that I caught rather randomly in a video some time ago that has been very helpful for me is to aim for the neck, not the head. Even if you’re trying for headshots you’ll simply land more shots more often if you aim for the neck because if you hit, great you were on the target and it will do damage. If you miss where you were aiming, though you still may land a good hit because you can miss high and land a headshot or you can miss low and still get a good body shot in.

Re-Spawn Video Game News – Samantha Fisher

Welcome to our video game news for week 42. From Fortnite Battle Royale bans caught on stream to the new Cthulu skin for Zenyatta in Overwatch, I bring you all the best news that caught our attention at GeekDad this week in Re-Spawn.

Video Game News Recap

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

This week for Fortnite Battle Royale tips I have a few gameplay videos for you. Don’t worry, none of them are mine. I’m way too terrible still to let people watch me! First up, watch Dakotaz make it to the end game, die in sixth place and then realize several of the remaining players were hackers and they get banned while he spectates. I guess Epic Games is serious about this banning hackers thing afterall.

Going a little meta, here is a recent video from rhinocrunch in a duo match with Dakotaz!

So what was my best placement this week? and I deserved that loss, I made several bone-headed moves toward the end and I’m shocked I lasted as long as I did. I’m currently testing out recording myself playing various games but we’re still a few weeks away from me being able to share good content. I’m learning, slowly.

My main tip, don’t overlook the traps. If you’re in a fairly popular spot or passing through one, toss a trap into one of the buildings and see how many mice you catch. Especially leading up to a frequent chest spawn.

Fortnite Battle Royale Upcoming Changes

  • Voice chat is live on PC with version 1.72 and will come to console soon.
  • They will be adding some new weapons in upcoming updates.
  • Consumables will be expanded, such as a potion that allows you to heal above 75% health and add some shield. Probably with a benefit over time effect.
  • Assault rifles are being tweaked for things like increased accuracy while moving.
  • Recoil will be introduced.
  • Considering removing hit scan and going with an all projectile approach to the weapons.
  • Auto-pickup of items that don’t take up inventory space such as ammo and building materials.
  • Account progression and character customization are upcoming changes as well.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

I played a few rounds of PUBG with GeekDad Randy Slavey and his son the other night. We’ll just get the confession out of the way… I almost shot his son. And it wasn’t even like someone was there and I was just getting a little wild with my shooting. Nope. I was moving from one part of the building to the other and just pushed the fire button as I walked toward him. Like a complete newb. And then had to hide in a bathroom for a few minutes to laugh because there is no way I can aim while I laugh so I took my hands off the controls until I got control of myself.

Check out this compilation video posted on the 19th. Just be aware with almost any PUBG video, there will be blood, violence, and lots of cursing. Some are amazing, others are just hilarious.

Re-Spawn Video Game News – Samantha Fisher

Welcome to our video game news for week 41. From Epic Games suing cheaters in Fortnite Battle Royale to the Halloween 2017 event in Overwatch and then on to the imminent death of Sony/Xbox crossplay I bring you all the best news that caught our attention at GeekDad this week in Re-Spawn.

Video Game News Recap

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

This week for Fortnite Battle Royale tips I wanted to highlight a different streamer. Known as Rhinocrunch, he is also currently sharing a lot of this game in his stream and YouTube channel. I love this video, I’m currently working on my sniping skills in the game and a whole video of him using the bolt action sniper rifle is very helpful. I also love when videos show the reality of the game, like what happens when you let yourself get low on ammo or building materials.

So what was my best placement this week? in a very questionable kill based on where I saw this player when I entered spectating mode after I died. I can’t control other player’s names so sorry in advance but here is my screenshot from the end of that match.

Third Place Fortnite Battle Royale
Third Place Fortnite Battle Royale

Do you have some Fortnite Battle Royale tips to share? Hit us up in the comments, share them on Facebook with us, or give me a shout on Twitter, @samanthafisher. I’d love to reshare your tips with the GeekDad followers.

And just for some comic relief, check these guys out. I laughed so much.

Fortnite Battle Royale Sues Cheaters

To quote the developers, “Nobody likes a cheater. And nobody likes playing with cheaters.” And to keep with that statement, Epic Games is going all out to ban cheaters, I saw FIVE people get banned in one match the other night. This was a solo match, by the way. And according to documents obtained by TorrentFreak Epic Games is going so far as to sue two particularly egregious cheaters for copyright infringement.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tips

I haven’t had as much time to play games lately so I’ve been a bit selective in what I spend time on. I had 45 minutes last night and I hopped into PUBG and played one match. Sadly it was getting late and I wasn’t on top of things so I forgot to screenshot my placement. I think placing 9th out of 100 after not playing for 4 weeks isn’t bad. So, what do I bring you this week instead of my Top 10 brag picture? How about the latest map by ShatterNL? This map is beyond useful for determining where to land, where to move, or where to find that car or buggy in a pinch when you realize you landed as far as possible from the circle. The above is a link to Reddit but the pictures of the map are on Imgur as well where you can blow them up really big on your second monitor.

I still think this beginner’s guide to PUBG from April is a great place to start for any new player, so if you’re thinking of taking the dive into the game check this one out.

For some more recent gameplay, you could do a lot worse than Aculite’s video. It gets a little blurry now and then from the stream I’m guessing but still solid.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

I have not gotten to partake in the Halloween event yet this year. This causes me some sadness but I hope all of you are playing and enjoying this annual event.

Xbox’s Latest Video Game News

Xbox does a weekly video and written recap of all the major news from their individual press releases and blog posts. Here you can find the video or follow this link to read the recap. This past week included new content for Cities: Skylines, the opening of pre-orders for Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War now on Xbox One and Windows 10 are some of the highlights but click the link above or watch the video below for all the details. Hey, is he proposing to me?!

Xbox’s Phil Spencer No Longer Confident in Crossplay with Sony PlayStation

Despite prior excitement about the idea, it appears Phil Spencer is now being a bit more realistic about the likelihood of crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation. Game Tyrant had a great take on it, reminding us that Sony is a business and if they think crossplay capability will infringe on their profits at all they are going to block it as hard and fast as possible.

Upcoming Games on Xbox

Xbox has 8 new video games releasing next week.

Re-Spawn Video Game News – Samantha Fisher

Welcome to our video game news for week 40. It is always much easier to write good content about games you actually play so you’ll start to notice me including regular entries on specific games. When I play a game often, I pick up some tricks of my own but I do spend a fair amount of time watching good players’ videos on Youtube. I’ll be including those periodically here for those interested in getting even better at the games they play or perhaps it will inspire you to pick up a game you’ve been thinking about trying but hadn’t yet played.

Video Game News Recap

Fortnite Battle Royale Tips

One of the best Fortnite Battle Royale streamers is dakotaz. He streams 5 days/week but since I have the pesky day job and a family and all that jazz I wait and watch his formatted videos as they hit on Youtube, usually as I’m trying to unwind a bit before bed. Though he’s great fun to watch live, I just don’t have that kind of time. One of his latest videos this week is a Tips and Tricks video. He doesn’t just show one or two matches he gleans clips from various matches to show you ways to increase your odds just a touch when you dive into a match.

Do you have some Fortnite Battle Royale tips to share? Hit us up in the comments, share them on Facebook with us, or give me a shout on Twitter, @samanthafisher. I’d love to reshare your tips with the GeekDad followers.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

The Halloween Terror event returns this year to Overwatch with all new content and action. The event starts on 10/10/2017 and ends 11/02/2017.

Blizzard has been teasing a bit about what to expect for the second iteration of this extremely fun event and of course it will involve new skins, voice lines, and sprays to collect. On 10/03 @PlayOverwatch shared this:

Reaper as a vampire and McCree as a vampire/demon hunter? Yes, please!

RejectedShotgun has an Overwatch News segment on their Youtube channel that I like to watch. I think they did a great job pulling together the latest information on new skins gleaned from the Facebook ads that have started pushing out just recently. Symmetra, Mei, Zenyatta (my main!), and Reaper are all highlighted in the videos.

Xbox’s Latest Video Game News

Xbox does a weekly video and written recap of all the major news from their individual press releases and blog posts. Here you can find the video or follow this link to read the recap. This past week included new information about Assassin’s Creed Origins, Forza 7, and several Fable games now playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility. You can watch the video below or click through above to get all the details.

Upcoming Games on Xbox

Xbox has 6 new video games releasing next week.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War

On October 10th you’ll be able to return to Mordor with this title now available as Play Anywhere. I like this trailer video, though it is a PlayStation video:

Decay: The Mare

Psychological horror video games are all the rage now, and Decay: The Mare will now be playable on Xbox One, continuing the spine-tingling trend. You play as Sam (should I worry?) an addict who is in an institution trying to turn his life around. But of course, things go very wrong very quickly.

Other Video Games releasing on Xbox One Next Week
  • Danger Zone
  • Raid: World War II
  • Shiny
  • The Evil Within 2

PlayStation’s Latest Video Game News

Steam’s Latest Video Game News

Ogre from Steve Jackson Games

This legend of tabletop games makes the leap to digital in this new release.

A Hat in Time now available

This isn’t my first mention of this game in Re-Spawn so you know it looks good when I mention a game twice! The game looks totally adorable and I love the premise of a little girl who stitches magical hats and uses them in her adventures. Available for both Windows and Mac for $29.99 for the standard edition and $35.18 for deluxe edition this will be one I add to my Steam list this week.

Below is a nice little gameplay video, though the guy does use language a tad more adult so be aware.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds vs. Fortnite Battle Royale

Fortnite, created by Epic Games, recently unveiled their own battle royale mode and Bluehole, makers of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG),  are none too pleased. Quotes from the head of Bluehole and PlayerUnknown himself Brendan Green, head game developer for PUBG, indicate that they are concerned that Epic Games not only created a battle royale game but that they seem to have copied the entire approach for it from their own PUBG. From the size of the island, to how the players arrive via parachute from a flyover, to how gear is found is essentially the same. The Fortnite version adds in some unique things like the ability to gather resources and build your own shelter and so on. The question being hotly debated is whether it is too similar or will all battle royale type games from now on be forever compared to PUBG.

Here is the latest from a great Fortnite Battle Royale streamer, dakotaz.

If you want to hear Brendan’s thoughts on the matter you can check out the archive of his AMA on Reddit from a little over a week ago.

Ataribox Details Released

Ataribox Design Reveal, copyright Atari
Ataribox Design Reveal, copyright Atari

Atari returns to the console biz with Ataribox. With a price point goal of $249 – $299 USD depending on editions and memory configurations, Ataribox is not to be confused with the plethora of throwback boxes that have been released the past year. This is an all-new system with the latest tech behind that familiar woodgrain faceplate. It is expected to release Spring 2018.

So, what do you get for your $299? According to Fed Chesnais, Atari Chief Executive Officer “We wanted to create an open system, a killer product where people can game, stream and browse with as much freedom as possible. Atari games and content will be available as well as games and content from other providers.” He goes on to say “Ataribox is an open system, and while our user interface will be easy to use, people will also be free to access and customize the underlying OS.”

For those curious, that underlying OS will be Linux OS and it will be customized for the TV. The console will launch, via Indiegogo, with an already large catalog of prior Atari classic games and some current titles from independent developers.

If you want to keep up on the latest information you can bookmark www.Atari.com, follow them on Facebook at https://facebook.com/atari, or follow them on Twitter @Atari.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

Confession time. I’ve been so busy with work and home and trying out some newer games (see below for a list of what I’ve been playing lately) that I did not play Overwatch for over 2 weeks. Until last night. Where I naively picked up Mercy again like no big deal and then didn’t know what in the heck I was doing for a round. My team was extremely cool about my faux pas and I picked up the recent changes quickly but I wish y’all could have heard my reaction when I couldn’t figure out which button to use for resurrecting. It definitely wasn’t safe for innocent ears.

Searching – Featuring Zarya

The latest comic for Overwatch features Zarya, aka Aleksandra Zaryanova on a mission to eliminate a threat to Mother Russia in the form of the elite hacker, Sombra. Follow along as we see Zarya forced to ally with an omnic in order to get the intel she needs.

Xbox does a weekly video and written recap of all the major news from their individual press releases and blog posts. Here you can find the video or follow this link to read the recap. This past week included the announcement that Xbox One X is heading to several retail locations soon including Best Buy, Microsoft Stores, and GameStop. Watch or click through to find out the rest!

Xbox Logo modified for X

Xbox announced on September 20th that the list of games that are either built for Xbox One X or have been enhanced to take advantage of the new capabilities of Xbox One X has now grown to over 130 games. You can see the full list here. They’ve also started the preorders for the Xbox One X Standard Edition and suggest you buy quickly as the Scorpio Edition sold out in 5 days.

Upcoming Games on Xbox

Cuphead

Xbox has the console exclusive on this retro run-and-shoot game based on 1930’s classic cartoons. The visuals are hand-drawn graphics and the game comes with an original jazz soundtrack to fit with the 30’s theme. There is a single-player and a local co-op mode where the second player plays as Mugman alongside Cuphead. I have both the announcement trailer and an almost 12-minute gameplay from PAX West (recorded live, so you’ll hear some background noise).

**GeekDad Writers Samantha Fisher, Mike LeSauvage, and Randy Slavey, as well as another friend, John, played Fortnite on Twitch.tv this weekend. Fair warning, we consider these streams “adults only” mainly because I cannot stop myself from cursing while I play. And making inappropriate jokes. I have to confess, listening to GeekDad Mike grow frustrated with the tutorial and spend 2 solids minutes on the manila envelopes is hilarious to see.

Samantha Fisher (and yes, I went an entire week without playing Overwatch, which shocked me as well):

Re-Spawn Video Game News Graphic by Samantha Fisher

Welcome to our video game news for week 37. As is the new normal for me I’ve been so busy I’ve barely had time for sleep, let alone video games this week. Weeks like this make me extra happy to take a few hours on the weekend and find out all the latest news in video games. Let’s catch up.

Video Game News Recap

Fortnite Battle Royale Mode

The Fortnite development team announced on the 12th that they were releasing a Battle Royale in an early release format based on the popularity of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). In fact, much of the controls and format are almost exactly what they are in PUBG, which I play. I haven’t yet played Fortnite but have to say the ability to bust down walls, build platforms and shelters (including traps), and that you can see your inventory on your screen are some pretty tight improvements. I’m including both the announcement trailer from Epic Games and a very sweet gameplay video by the streamer Dakotaz. There’s a little bit of cursing, but for the most part, he keeps it clean. Cleaner than I do when things go sideways on me in PUBG!

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

Play Nice, Play Fair

This week’s Developer’s Update took a different tactic. One that I had to think on quite a bit before I could come up with what about it bothered me so much. On the surface, everything in this message is true and reasonable. Jeff Kaplan tells us that they are working hard to handle toxicity faster and better, including a notification step that lets the person who reports an issue know when an action against a player has been taken. He goes on to tell us that they need us to stop being jerks and play nicely because having the devs deal with these issues takes them away from developing new content in the game and out, such as animated shorts and comics. All very good and reasonable things to say, right?

Here’s the thing, though. I’ve had my life threatened, I’ve been threatened with rape, and I’ve been called a whore in this game simply for speaking and having the “team” hear a female voice. I’ve made many reports against toxic players (in the beginning) and then I gave up. Why? Because I know it would come down to proof and without recording every match I play, how could I prove what happened? And I pay to play the game. I don’t pay to put up with threats. So I do expect some safeguards to be in place and I do expect Blizzard to help handle issues when they crop up. This message sounds so reasonable to those of us who are reasonable in the game, but I’m afraid it won’t matter to the very toxic players who are causing the issues. So I think it reasonable to expect Blizzard to continue to support their players with help dealing with toxic players.

One other thing, I saw one of these new features in action this week. I was in a Quick Play match when the game crashed. Just completely shut down. I was DOMINATING that match as Junkrat and playing DPS is a rare treat for me. I’m almost always a support or tank character, which I enjoy but need a break from now and then. No way did I bail on that match. I get the game up and running again, am a minute or two into a Quick Play and my entire computer crashed. I have a picture of that one, actually as I needed to look up the error code. Reboot, log back in and the first thing I see is a warning message that if I leave too many games early there will be repercussions. Really?! I’d prefer you deal with the threatening people and let us deal with match skippers ourselves if I had to choose.

Free Weekend September 22nd – September 25th, 2017

Re-Spawn Video Game News Graphic by Samantha Fisher

Welcome to our video game news for week 36. Fall is upon us and that means a lot of new video games will be releasing soon so I’ve combed the news over (combed over the news?) to pick out some of the things that tickled my fancy. Let’s dive in!

Video Game News Recap

Catan VR

Just announced, the classic tabletop game that changed the face of tabletop games, Settlers of Catan, is making the leap to virtual reality. Few details of what that means are available but we do know that you’ll be able to play against other players across the world as well as against AI. The announcement also mentions you will feel “immersed” in the world of Catan and that the VR experience will be cross-platform. I’m sure there will be more details available as development progresses on catan.com.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

Animated Shorts

The Overwatch team does a superb job of keeping the lore of the game alive. Last week I shared their latest animated short with “Rise and Shine.” This week they released a behind the scenes video showing how they make these wonderful videos.

The team doesn’t stop at animated shorts, they also publish periodic digital comic books. The most recent comic takes us to the new map in the game, Junkertown. Roadhog is our main protagonist but other Overwatch characters make appearances.

Xbox’s Latest Video Game News

Killer Instinct Update Introduces Cross-Play

If you recently downloaded the 3.9 release of Killer Instinct and haven’t gone exploring in the settings yet, you’ll want to do so now. This update added cross-play between X-box, Windows 10, and Steam playing platforms. Exciting, right? Another step made toward letting me play my PC games with my Xbox friends and vice versa! There are just some games I prefer on PC and others on a console, usually centered around if I think a mouse/keyboard combo is better or a handheld controller. Alas, I am not a player of Killer Instinct but I like that the option is becoming available and that it is just that, an option. You can toggle it off and play exclusively on your own platform or locally.

There is one little catch. This is a live test of the tooling for cross-play. You should expect things to go wrong for now while they watch how it works in the wild and make tweaks over time.

Want more details? Here is the announcement on the Xbox News blog.

Upcoming Games on Xbox

Xbox has 15 new video games releasing next week, with 5 of those new versions of sports games. You can pick up NBA Live 18, NBA 2K18, EA Sports NHL 18, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, or Nascar Heat 2 in that genre. Sports games not your thing? Let’s take a look at a few other games you could pick up for your Xbox next week:

Maize

Maize was originally released on Windows (and via Steam) in December 2016. This first person adventure style game pairs you with a foul-mouthed bear sidekick who bears a remarkable likeness to Teddy Ruxpin. And let’s not forget the talking, walking, really tired and in need of a nap corn. Sadly, the developer site appears to have been abandoned since the beginning of this year.

Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition

Don’t Starve Together has been a vastly popular game on Steam in the past, and now it makes the move to Xbox with this Console Edition.

Current Games with Gold are Trials Fusion (08/16 – 09/15), Forza Motorsport 5: Racing Game of the Year Edition (09/01 – 09/30), and Hydro Thunder Hurricane (09/01 – 09/15)

You can check out the games on sale right now on the Deals With Gold page.

Nintendo’s Latest Video Game News

Super NES Classic Edition

Super NES Classic video game system Developer Interview Series

Preorders for this system appear to have sold out pretty much everywhere, but you can still join in on the fun by watching the six-part developer interview series that Nintendo is hosting here. Each of the six videos will highlight a different development team from the games that are included on the NES Classic.

Nintendo Video Game Releases

You can view all the new releases as well as upcoming ones on this game store page. The only game releasing next week for Nintendo is Monster Hunter Stories.

PlayStation’s Latest Video Game News

This week’s The Drop highlights 22 new releases in the upcoming week. PlayStation has many sports games releasing this week, as well so I’ll highlight other games on the list. Check out the blog entry for the full list but here are a couple that caught my eye:

Tooth and Tail

Real-time strategy meets a menagerie in the Tooth and Tail video game. With single player campaign, online competitive, split screen, and replay options there are many ways to lead your animal troops to victory in this one.

Manifest 99

Creepy and VR seem to be such a natural pairing and Manifest 99 is one of the latest video games to take advantage of that. Solving a mystery on a train isn’t anything new, but in this game, the train is trundling through the afterlife.

Welcome to our video game news for week 35. Labor Day Weekend is often a 3-day weekend for folks and that is the case for me and mine. I have Monday off from work and my son has it off from school. No big surprise we’ve decided to pack the extra long weekend full of video games! I’ve picked up several new games to play by myself, such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and we also picked up Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle to play together. Now, let’s see what else happened this week in the world of video games.

Don’t Knock Twice

This 1st person VR horror game is based the urban legend of the same name. Play as a mother trying to save her estranged daughter with the tagline “One knock to wake her from the bed, Twice to raise her from the dead.” Creepy.

You can play as 8 different characters, several of which are Rabbid versions of classic Mario characters. You get to explore 4 different lands and each is rife with homages to old Mario games. And you get to do all of this with over 250 unique weapons. So much fun! Learn more about what this game offers on the announcement page of the Nintendo website.

Welcome to our video game news for week 34. Nothing helps me overcome exhaustion better than sitting down to read up on the latest video game news. I spent this weekend catching up on what I missed this past week when I was too busy to pay attention to much of anything, and here are a few highlights of what caught my attention.

Video Game News Recap

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Overwatch

Developer Update – Season 6 Changes

Season 5 ends today, August 28th at 5PM PT and Season 6 begins on August 31st, 2017. With this video, Game Director Jeff Caplin highlights what will be different when Season 6 of competitive play begins in Overwatch.

Starting with Season 6, the competitive seasons will be two months long instead of three. Total points at the end of the season will be a little smaller as a result but the expectation is that over a full year it will pretty well balance out. Also, for each win you get in Competitive Mode, you will earn slightly more points than in prior seasons.

Skill point decay is being tweaked by only requiring 5 games/week to maintain your ranking instead of the 7 games required prior to Season 6. Also, the decay rate will be 25 points instead of 50 each time.

There are several different types of competitive matches. The most grueling and longest duration maps are consistently the control point maps. In order to get these map types more in line with the others, they will now be a best of 3 instead of best of 5.

Placement matches will be updated so that you get placed into a rank on par with your skill level. In prior seasons they had enacted a change that would place you slightly lower than where your skill ranking would have you, thinking it would make people feel good to see immediate progression when they finished placement and started their season matches but realized it was unduly penalizing people who had good prior season rankings and good current season placement match results.

Matchmaking is being tweaked and may take a little longer. The hope is that it won’t be too high of impact on wait times, and the guess is that the highest ranked players will feel the most delay but reap the most benefit by more consistently being placed into 50/50 odds matches more often.

Latest short, “Rise and Shine”

The cutest animated short to date hit on August 23rd with this look at how Mei wound up sleeping through the death of Overwatch (the group, not the game).

Welcome to our video game news for week 33. I was supposed to head to GenCon 50 this past week but some real-life things got in the way of that. So I did what any sad panda would do when she can’t play tabletop games with all her nerd friends. I played video games with other nerd friends! I also combed the ‘net looking for interesting new gaming news to share with y’all. We’ll take a look at the new Star Wars Battlefront 2 gameplay trailer that dropped and then finishes up with a recap of GeekDad and GeekMom articles written about video gaming as well as what we’ve been playing lately. Oh, and there’s lots of other stuff in between.

Video Game News Recap

General News Updates

Star Wars Battlefront 2

EA dropped a new gameplay trailer over the weekend. This one shows Starfighter Assault mode. Yoda goes PEW! PEW! PEW! Oh, take some motherly advice here and do not read the comments on this video. Apparently, the female pilot voice in this trailer has ticked some dudes off.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

StarCraft: Remastered

StarCraft: Remastered released about a week ago. For $14.99 you can upgrade and modernize your current StarCraft experience. According to a recent press release from Blizzard, the following key features are included in this update:

  • Full graphical upgrade of the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion
  • Widescreen UHD support for up to 4K resolution
  • Matchmaking and leaderboards
  • Player profiles that track individual statistics
  • Cloud saving for campaign progress, hotkeys, and replays
  • Improved high fidelity music and sound
  • Ability to switch between Remastered and the original StarCraft with the click of a button

Battle.net Branding Lives!

Blizzard has finally given up on this strange desire to rebrand their online gaming service. In a recent press release, they simply requested when writing about it refer to it as “Blizzard Battle.net.” I’ll do my best. The above heading aside, of course. And here is the logo they loaded into the press kit:

Blizzard Battle.net Branding

Thank goodness that silliness is over because I can assure any Blizz reps reading this none of us stopped calling it Battle.net.

Xbox’s Latest Video Game News

Knock-Knock

Though this game has been out for a few years, it is just now available on Xbox. Does it get much creepier than an old creaky cabin in the woods at night? Are you as mesmerized by the way they walk in this game as I am?

Battle of the Bulge

Are war games more your style? How about tabletop style games gone digital? This one should be right up your alley. Again, not a new game per se, but new to Xbox this upcoming week.

Current Games with Gold are Trials Fusion (08/16 – 09/15), Red Faction: Armageddon (08/16 – 08/31), and Slime Rancher (08/01 – 08/31)

Minecraft: Story Mode – The Complete Adventure

Minecraft: Story Mode hits the Nintendo Switch 08/22/17. No new features or anything but will now be available to play on Switch. Somehow I’d gone all this time not realizing that Corey Feldman does voice work in this game. Now there’s a blast from my adolescent past.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon

New details were recently revealed by Nintendo. The game releases in November 2017 but the ever-hungry Pokémon fans have already viewed the video featured in the press release August 18th, 2017 over 1.2 million times. Now you get to watch it, too! You can get all the details on gameplay and characters in the press release if you prefer.

PlayStation’s Latest Video Game News

Re-Spawn: Video Game News for Week 32 – August 6th to August 12th, 2017 https://geekdad.com/2017/08/re-spawn-17/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=re-spawn-17 Mon, 14 Aug 2017 16:00:15 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=256628 Re-Spawn - This Week's Video Game News

Welcome to our video game news for week 32. I believe the weather lords heard my whining last week and have bestowed some gorgeous sunshine and not-too-hot weather on us here in Central Ohio. I’ve been soothing my soul with sunshine and hard work in the yard instead of with keyboards and controllers this week. But there is never a week that goes by that I don’t spend a little time finding out what is going on in the world of video games. Let’s take a look at what I found interesting this week.

Video Game News Recap

General News Updates

#VideoGamesIn5Words

This hashtag has been trending on Twitter and bringing me such joy. Check it out when you have some down time this week but here are a few highlights:

https://twitter.com/CupcakeGirl1444/status/896784171867267073

https://twitter.com/RojoGuero/status/896783903557648384

And my favorite, for obvious reasons:

Cat Quest

As I was writing this article my son pops in to tell me about Cat Quest. This game is freaking adorable. I had to feature it this week. By developer The Gentle Bros, you’ll enjoy over 60 quests and over 50 dungeons when you become a catventurer in the land of Felingard. Felingard is a 2D open world format for you to explore as you see fit. Check out the video below then prepare to order. It was available on STEAM August 8th and has very positive reviews. It hit iOS on August 10th and will be available for Android in September. Want it on console? The game is slated for release on PS4 and Nintendo Switch by the end of the year. You can find more details on the website, as well.

Blizzard’s Latest Video Game News

Hearthstone

Knights of  The Frozen Throne released last week. The expansion features Hero Cards. This is a new card type that, when played, replaces your hero. When it lands you replace your hero with the one on the card, gaining armor, casting a Battlecry, and you get a new and powerful Hero Power. Listen to one of the developers explain how this feature can enhance your gameplay.

Overwatch

Summer Games 2017 has arrived! Newsflash, I’m horrible at Lucio Ball. So bad it makes me wonder how I ever manage to headshot anyone in the regular game. I’m an embarrassment to my friends that made the mistake of trying it with me.

In better news, I have been enjoying the new skins, emotes, sprays, etc. I’ve gotten the new McCree beach skin (let’s pause while I fan myself on this one), the new Widowmaker beach skin, and several voice lines and sprays.

Looking just a bit like an LSD trip at first pass, this game is an intense ride through space set to rhythmic music.

The Pillars of the Earth

If you like games that are more like an interactive novel, The Pillars of the Earth is a beautiful version of this game style.

Current Games with Gold are Runbow (07/16 – 08/15), Bayonetta (08/01 – 08/15), and Slime Rancher (08/01 – 08/31)
