We Are Entertain

This week the boys fully expected to be blown away by The Goldfinch, it has the cast, the director, and the source material to be an immediate Oscar contender. Opinions are mixed, however, on how well it met that promise. Tune in and let us know what you think and whether or not we should be expecting to see The Goldfinch make a run during award season.

Chris kicks things off by continuing his romp through period piece spy movies. More a filmed stage production than a thriller this one receives solid reviews if you’re the kind of person who likes a slow burn. Matt is intrigued but we’re not sure it’s for everyone. Can a film “look English?” If so, that’s certainly how Chris feels about this one. Maybe a little pre-gaming for Downton Abbey

Matt hits us with a powerful dose of nostalgia as he gets caught up with The Walking Dead which, apparently is still in production. Who knew? It turns out the joke’s on us, according to us the newest season is fantastic. It has just dropped on Netflix and Matt insists that it’s worth diving back in if you’ve taken a break (and let’s be honest, who hasn’t?). Take a read through Wikipedia and find out what you’ve missed and tune in so you can let Chris know whether or not it’s really worth picking back up.

Finally the boys dig into The Goldfinch. It’s fair to say that a movie based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel has a lot to live up to. We’re not sure it does the job but without spoiling anything it’s entirely fair to say you need to make sure to take a potty break before this one kicks off. This is a long movie and feels much longer than its advertised 2:29 runtime. Even at two-and-a-half hours it still feels like there’s so much story missing and we can’t help but admit there are nooks and crannies we would have loved to dive into that the film breezes through. We really expected this one to be nominated for a ton of awards before we saw it but now we’re pretty doubtful. Did you see it? What do you think?

We Are Entertained - The Peanut Butter Falcon

This week was a barn burner. The boys had a rousing discussion about news from Disney and Apple, gave their opinions on The Spy and Late Nightand then dove headfirst into one of the best movies of the year, The Peanut Butter Falcon.

This week Chris is pleasantly surprised by the new Netflix miniseries The Spy. The surprise doesn’t come from anything particularly ground-breaking in the telling of the story but instead from the phenomenal performance of Sacha Baron Cohen. Cohen demonstrates considerable dramatic chops playing the role of Eli Cohen, Israel’s most famous Mossad agent, in this true-to-life adaptation of his rise to prominence in Syria leading up to the Six-Day War. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Matt checked out Late Night, the story of a late night talk-show host who is struggling to remain current. Mindy Kaling is hired to spice things up and hijinks ensue. Matt enjoyed the film but had some real questions about a few plot points that didn’t sit quite right with him, particularly since Mindy Kaling herself wrote the screenplay. It gets a thumbs up but, strangely, also a warning that you need to stick through the first half of the movie for the payoff.

After a few months of lukewarm reactions to movies, it appears we’ve finally gotten to Oscar season. Both hosts really enjoyed The Peanut Butter Falcon and have a lot to say about the performances of Shia LaBeoufDakota Johnson, and (most outstanding of all) Zack Gottsagen. If you haven’t heard of this film it’s not likely your fault; it’s still in somewhat limited release, but it’s definitely worth the effort to find a showing and see it sooner rather than later.

We Are Entertained - The Wandering Earth

This week the boys record their monthly Patreon Directed episode featuring the Yorgos Lanthimos mind-bender Dogtooth and the Chinese language blockbuster The Wandering Earth. This one is guaranteed to knock your socks off!

Things kick off this week with news brought to you by the show’s unofficial official news correspondent, Eddie. The boys talk Tivo, misguided reporting, and ponder the pontificating power of Chris’ prediction about the future of Netflix.

Both enthusiastic fans of Yorgos Lanthimos, Dogtooth was sure to be an exciting watch for the hosts. Their reactions to the film couldn’t have been more different! Have you seen this one? Give us some feedback and let us know what you thought. Horror? Comedy? What exactly is this film?

The show ends with a rousing conversation about the Chinese language blockbuster The Wandering Earth. This was something of a bonus for the Patreon Directed episode in that it bubbled up during a conversation with a listener in Beijing who shared that it was the highest-grossing film in China this year. How could you not check that one out?! The reaction to this one might just surprise long-time listeners. As always, send in your suggestions! You never know when you might get a shout out on the show and your favorite movie might just make it into an episode!

If you’re a Patreon sponsor at any level, make sure to check your private feed to hear lots of bonus content this week including segments about watching Lawrence of Arabia in the theater and the Nicolas Cage “masterpiece” Next.

We Are Entertained: ‘Someone Great’ https://geekdad.com/2019/04/we-are-entertained-someone-great/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-someone-great Fri, 26 Apr 2019 18:00:48 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=330991 We Are Entertained - Someone Great

It’s the last week of March Movie Madness! Could this get more exciting? Captain America: Civil War vs Wonder Woman. Marvel vs DC, man vs woman, indestructible shield vs irresistible lasso, dorky-goody-two-shoes hero vs goddess-like heroine: you get the picture. For our final matchup we’re taking it up a notch—everyone who casts a vote will also be entered to win a Steam Link courtesy of the We Are Entertained podcast! One lucky listener will be announced along with the victor of March Movie Madness on our Avengers: Endgame episode. Make sure you don’t miss it. Get your votes in now!

It’s also our Monthly Streaming Original Episode wherein we take a break from the theater and focus the show on a stinker an original film from one of the popular streaming services. So far we haven’t had great luck finding diamonds in the rough, but we shall soldier on! This month we’ll be talking about Someone Great, an ultra-fresh romcom flush with incredible talent. Tune in and hear what we thought!

The show starts off this week with an update from our Unofficial Official News Correspondent where we discuss Netflix’s decision to add the ability to shuffle episodes, the Academy’s somewhat controversial decision regarding Oscar eligibility, and Disney’s decision to cut several Fox films following their 71.3 billion dollar acquisition earlier this year.

Chris surprises Matt by coming up with a film he’s never heard of to discuss, Donald Glover’s Guava Island. Perhaps the most surprising part of the entire conversation that follows is that Chris has heard of Coachella. Go figure. Matt sparks a fascinating (we promise) conversation about Sissy Spacek as he shares his thoughts on The Old Man & the Gun. We won’t keep you in suspense on these two; we loved them and highly recommend them to all our listeners. Let us know if you agree!

We Are Entertained: ‘Captain Marvel’ https://geekdad.com/2019/03/we-are-entertained-captain-marvel/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-captain-marvel Thu, 21 Mar 2019 10:00:34 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=328115 We Are Entertained - Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel, what a great way to kick off March Movie Madness! This week represents the first Marvel Cinematic Bookend for our March Movie Madness Comic Book edition. We’ll be tallying your votes and crowning a comic book movie champion just in time for the release of Avengers: Endgame. Make sure you vote early and vote often: who do you think belongs in the Comic Book Final Four?

This week Chris takes on the Netflix original The Umbrella Academy and discovers that Matt is already a huge fan. It’s a good thing too, at only 4 episodes in Chris was feeling a little unsure of whether or not to continue but after receiving the “Duuuuuuuude” from his stalwart co-host he knows he must continue. Do you agree, is this must-see TV?

Speaking of TV shows that everyone is on the fence about, Matt finally caves in and watches Season 3 of True Detective on HBO. This is one that has vexed all of us; Season 1 was some of the best television ever and everyone agrees that Season 2 existed, we think. Is it good news or bad news? Well, you’ll have to tune in to find out now, won’t you?

The boys finally get down to business and dish their feelings about Captain Marvel. It’s a film that Chris has been anticipating for so long, because he and his kids love Carol Danvers and (almost) all the different variants of Captain Marvel. Matt, of course, is a sucker for anything in the MCU so he bought his ticket months ago. Black Panther broke the mold for comic book movies and was nominated for an Academy Award; will Captain Marvel follow suit? Will we see Brie Larson on the red carpet come Oscar season? Listen in and let us know if we’re all on the same page about this one!

We Are Entertained: ‘Greta’ https://geekdad.com/2019/03/we-are-entertained-greta/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-greta Fri, 15 Mar 2019 14:00:45 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=327411 We Are Entertained - Greta

This week we kick things off by talking about our new and improved Patreon perks. We’d love for you to let us know what you think of the new options and please, PLEASE let us know if there’s something you’d like to see that we haven’t thought of yet. You can find us at patreon.com/weareentertained.

And, of course, we dive into the not-foreign film Greta and have a rousing debate about why it wasn’t as good as it should have been.

Chris fought the instincts that warned him to flee and saw Isn’t It Romantic and was pleasantly surprised, both by how good the film was and by how upset Matt got when he kept referring to Rebel Wilson as “Fat Amy.” Much sensitivity training follows. This is one of the most meta works of art you’ve ever seen and there is so much fourth-wall breaking it’s a wonder the whole thing can stand on its own (haha), but it definitely delivers.

Matt brings the lighthearted joviality that you’ve come to know and love as he shares the Netflix film A Futile and Stupid Gesture with us. This biopic is a must-see if you’re a fan of comedy and is sure to open up a whole new world of understanding to those of us who think of SNL as the beginning and the ending of all that’s funny.

Finally, we dive into this week’s feature Greta. This film is sure to introduce many in the states to Isabella Huppert, one of our favorite actresses. Everything about this one seems to set it up for success—the talent is top notch, the cinematography is top notch, the genre is as close to a sure thing as you’ll find outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, things don’t work out quite the way we had hoped. Tune in to hear what we think went wrong and let us know if you disagree!

We Are Entertained: ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ https://geekdad.com/2018/12/we-are-entertained-ralph-breaks-the-internet/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-ralph-breaks-the-internet Wed, 12 Dec 2018 13:00:49 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=319661 We Are Entertained-Ralph Breaks The Internet

Yowzers, we’ve got a humdinger of an episode for you this week. Not only do the boys give their take on Ralph Breaks the Internet but we have two very special guests of the very small Wickersham variety! Chloe, who you hear Chris talk about all the time, and Lucas, who is the most little brother of all little brothers, drop in and share their perspective on RBTI. You don’t want to miss this one!

Things kick off this week with the return of the MoviePass Update. It’s been a while but you can’t keep a good segment down. Chris shares one of the most interesting media adventures he’s been on in a while. As an avid podcast listener (as I’m sure you are, good friends) I’m sure you’re familiar with WNYC Studios and all of the great shows they produce.

One of Chris’ favorites is More Perfect and for their recently completed third season, they did something unusual and (he thinks) fantastic. The studio commissioned an album from a variety of talented artists and called it 27: The Most Perfect Albuma homage to the 27 Amendments to the US Constitution. You heard me, an album dedicated to the US Constitution. And it’s good, really surprisingly good. Furthermore, they dedicated the entire season of More Perfect to producing so-called liner notes for the songs wherein they go into detail and explain both the story behind the Amendment and the song which was inspired by it. It. Is. Fantastic. You can read more about it at http://themostperfectalbum.org

Leave it to Matt to try and kindle the Christmas spirit, Ho Ho Ho. Watching what is sure to be, uh, a new Christmas classic, Matt can’t say enough good things about The Christmas ChroniclesThis is, we’re not kidding, Kurt Russell as Ol’ St. Nick and some of the funniest little elves that have ever graced the frames of a Christmas movie. It’s really cute, it’s tender and lighthearted, and you won’t be able to avoid falling for it. It’s like Christmas movie version of Die Hard.

And finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Two of Chris’ kids crash the studio and give us their hot take on Wreck It Ralph Breaks the Internet. We may be biased but we think it’s the cutest thing you’ll hear today. If you just can’t stand to wait, fast forward to 1:06 and prepare for hilarity. If you like their segment drop a comment and we’ll see if we can get them back on.

Make sure you check out the Q&A that GeekDad Whit did with the cast of Ralph Breaks the Internet!

We Are Entertained: ‘A Simple Favor’ https://geekdad.com/2018/09/we-are-entertained-a-simple-favor/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-a-simple-favor Fri, 28 Sep 2018 18:00:25 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=304411 We Are Entertained - A Simple Favor

The boys are back this week and, in the spirit of football season, Matt calls an audible. Instead of fulfilling last week’s promise and seeing The Predator, we take a somewhat predictable turn and check out the latest Anna Kendrick movie (surprise, surprise, surprise) A Simple Favor. What do you think, did we make the right call?

In addition to A Simple Favor, Chris decided to finally catch up on a show that he has been meaning to watch for years, The Americans. Luckily this series is available on Amazon Video and free to stream for Prime members, so we can gorge ourselves on one of the finest shows (if I do say so) to come around in years. The show recently completed its final season and, though it struggled somewhat in the middle years, finishes on an incredible high note. Must-watch TV!

Matt, however, was not as pleased with his selection. He forced himself to watch season 2 of Iron Fist, something he regretfully informed Chris that he needs to watch in order to keep up to speed on the Marvel universe. But first Chris needs to see Luke Cage season 2. And Jessica Jones season 2. And Iron Fist season 1. Basically, Chris has a whole semester project in front of him just so he can watch what Matt calls a necessary disappointment. Bummer, dude. The good news is, apparently, that it gets better the longer you watch it, so maybe a case of beer and a few bags of Funyuns will go a long way towards helping Chris get through it.

Feature Film: Ocean’s 8

What can you say about this week’s movie? It seemed like it has everything going for it: star-studded cast, iconic franchise, media hype out the wazoo, a disappointing showing by Solo. We’re ripe for another runaway hit. Sigh, if only. I think if there’s one thing the boys could say about Ocean’s 8 it’s this… it was fine. Luckily, there’s a lot more they’re allowed to say; after all, it’s their show and they make the rules! Tune in and tell us if we completely missed what made this week’s biggest movie a hit.

Homework

We’re really enjoying the new homework segment of the show and we hope you are too. As a reminder, after we share what’s been entertaining us over the past week, we challenge each other to check out that particular film, series, or book and bring feedback to the next show. This week Matt’s homework was to watch the HBO feature film adaptation of Fahrenheit 451. Last week Chris was on the fence about the movie but wondered if it had to do with his love of the Ray Bradbury novel it was based on. Spoiler alert—it wasn’t. Chris was challenged to watch the Netflix original film Cargo as well as the award-winning short film it was adapted from and report back his take on the quality of the adaptation. I think you’ll really like this segment. We enjoyed recording it. We’d love to get your feedback and hope you’ll consider joining in on the conversation—homework for everyone!

If you’re thinking of checking out this movie with the kids, be sure to head over and check out the GeekDad post about 8 Things Parents Should Know About ‘Ocean’s 8’ first. Tell ’em Chris sent ya!

What’s Been Entertaining Us

On this week’s show, we turn in a pair of Netflix originals for your consideration. Chris was once again tempted by the Netflix suggestion algorithm and clicked through to watch Alex Strangelove. This film was held up to be very similar to a film from earlier this year that Chris really enjoyed, Love, Simon, but it didn’t quite hit all the same marks. Listen in and see if it’s a film you’ll want to sit down and watch. Honest warning—we wouldn’t recommend letting the kids watch this one even though all the marketing seems to point it towards a really young audience.

Matt kept plugging along on his quest to see all movies named after Paul Simon songs and watched the film KodachromeThis is a really interesting film that is not quite a true story but is definitely “ripped from the headlines” in the style of Law and Order. Starring Jason Sudeikis, Elizabeth Olsen, and Ed Harris (not Ed Helms, despite the idiocy of Chris during recording), it receives high praise from Matt and we’re hoping everyone gives it a watch before we discuss it in depth on next week’s show.

Feature Film: Solo: A Star Wars Story

It’s all over the news, Solo is being called a failure. What did the boys think? I can’t reveal all of our secrets, you’ll have to listen for details, but I will give you a clue and say that our thoughts were more positive than negative. We do talk a little bit about what other people are saying about the movie but we’re sure you’ve read everything everyone else has said – tune in and find out what we loved, what we hated, and what baffled us about Solo: A Star Wars Story

Homework

In our new segment we take a look back at last week and have a deeper conversation about “What’s Been Entertaining Us,” now that everyone has had a chance to see/read/listen to it. This week Chris watched Evil Genius and was able to get down into the nitty gritty details with Matt about this shocking real life thriller. Did you have a chance to watch it? What do you think? Do you believe Jessica Hoopsick?

Matt checked out the first three episodes of Lost in Space and and enjoyed it too. He didn’t have the same excitement about the performances of the kids that Chris did but thought it was a solid piece on all fronts. The real question is whether or not either one of us in enjoying it enough to continue on and finish the season. What’s your take, did you watch the whole thing? Should we finish it?

What’s Been Entertaining Us

This week Matt checked out the Netflix original Cargo. This was a weird one for him because he had previously watched and fell in love with a short film of the same name. It turns out the Netflix film was a feature length treatment of the original Zombie Apocalypse short. Matt loved it and thought it was a great adaptation that hit all of the same high marks as the original. Chris will be taking it on as homework this week and we’d love for you to do the same!

Chris took on another adaptation but wasn’t quite as thrilled. This one was Fahrenheit 451 presented by HBO films. While he thought this was a really enjoyable film he felt like it would have been a lot better if it hadn’t been tied to the classic Ray Bradbury novel. Matt is going to check it out for homework and we hope you will too! If you’re a fan of the book let us know what you think and if you haven’t read it please let us know if you enjoyed the film!

Feature Film: Rampage

After an unexpected week off, the boys knock the rust off with a sure fire winner and what must surely be the 37th feature film for The Rock of 2018, Rampage. There was a long time where Chris couldn’t quite wrap his head around the phenomenon of The Rock but this movie may just have pushed him over the edge. What do you think, are we entering a phase where there’s just too much The Rock or would you be happy with a new feature every week starring His Muscleboundness?

What’s Been Entertaining Us

Chris was so frustrated when Blockers showed up on the calendar as the movie of the week that he subconsciously transformed the calendar entry to read A Quiet Place. We all know that Matt shies away from horror movies but this one came out of the gates swinging and is poised to be the sleeper hit of 2018. It’s possible that Matt can be convinced to see it; the only question is whether or not Chris thinks it’s worth the effort to change his mind! Let us know what you think: should Matt go see it, and, if he does, should he bring popcorn into the theater with him?

Matt confounds us all with his rousing endorsement of a movie he can only describe as having both liked and disliked immensely at the same time. Confused? That describes Miss Sloane in a nutshell according to Matt. It’s a movie that we think will be ruined by spoilers and Chris was challenged to watch it, so tune in next week for a little bit deeper discussion of the film.

A very strange collection of entries in the world of cinema this week. Despite fierce criticism and intense opposition from Chris, the boys took on Pacific Rim: Uprising as this week’s feature. One of us wound up loving it, the other was a bit let down. Surprise, both of us thought it was a terrible movie! That bit of confusing nonsense just about sums up our show this week; give it a listen and see if you can piece together what we thought of this movie. I’d sure love to hear your opinions on it!

As always, our quest is to find something entertaining that can inspire conversation between friends and hopefully engage the listeners. I think we did a good job this week. Chris finally got the chance to see a movie he’s really been wanting to see since he saw the first trailer, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Turns out Matt saw the very same movie this week and a lively discussion ensues.

Matt was all set to bring the Wonder Women movie to the show as his selection this week (maybe we should try to actually schedule this a little better… nahhhh) but luckily he decided to watch The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a movie so strange he had to show Chris a clip of it before they could even begin to talk about it. Have you seen it? Did you see The Lobster, another crazy movie by director Yorgos Lanthimos? We’d love to hear what you thought about either or both of these films!

We Are Entertained: Game Night https://geekdad.com/2018/03/entertained-game-night/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=entertained-game-night Sat, 03 Mar 2018 15:00:59 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=291976 We Are Entertained - Game Night

This week we take on the new comedy Game Night, which confused the heck out of us during planning because normally “Game Night” doesn’t show up on the calendar without beer and beefy queso to accompany it. (Can you say 3-for-1 on Tostitos Scoops?) The boys went into this one with wildly different expectations, but their reactions may surprise you. As part of our love for tabletop gaming, we’re asking listeners to send us their favorite or go-to game for a night in with friends. Let us know, and listen to the show to hear what we’ve got planned for two lucky listeners who share!

Chris is entertained this week by a trip down memory lane. While surfing Netflix he discovers the series Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States and is reminded of a time when the History Channel was non-stop WW2 documentaries and any Sunday afternoon could be filled with the delicate sounds of warfare on PBS. Originally produced for Showtime and accompanied by a companion book of the same title, this series has all of the controversy you’d expect from an Oliver Stone production.

Matt accidentally watches another movie about Dunkirk this week and is thoroughly impressed. What’s more surprising is that it’s another Saoirse Ronan film. Could she be crowding out Anna Kendrick as the focus of Matt’s actress obsession? Either way, he highly recommends you check out Atonement, and let us know your thoughts about The Dress.

It’s our 4th Annual Oscar Pre-Show Extravaganza! Wow, can you believe that? I’ll say it again: 4th Annual!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the format, this episode is a little different than most of the others. The boys run through the nine (yes, nine) Best Picture nominees for the 90th Annual Academy Awards. Haven’t seen all the nominees? No worries, we’ll post the time codes of each film we cover below so you can jump right to the ones that interest you. One of our favorite parts of the episode is the “Should Win/Will Win” predictions. Take a listen and let us know what you think. What are your picks for “Should Win/Will Win?”

We Are Entertained: ‘Hostiles’ https://geekdad.com/2018/02/we-are-entertained-hostiles/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-hostiles Sat, 03 Feb 2018 19:00:01 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=288457 We Are Entertained: Hostiles

This week the boys revisit the topic of films being “snubbed” at the Oscars as they tackle what can only be called the best film of 2017 with no Oscar nominations. Do yourself a favor and get out to the theaters and see Hostiles and then immediately listen to this episode!

Chris kicks things off (after the obligatory MoviePass update!) by talking about Netflix’s original film Bright. This movie is an enigma and the conversation leads Matt to bring up the issue of talking about movies you don’t like on the show. Should we do it? Should we only talk about movies we like or do you, our faithful listeners, love hearing about the good ones and the bad ones alike.

Matt talked about how surprised he was to really, really enjoy the 2016 film Nerve and Chris was really, really surprised that Matt didn’t remember that Chris’ friend’s sister knows the author of the book it was adapted from. We can only describe this film as the most Millenium-ized movie ever produced.

You can listen on iTunes, Google Play, iHeartRadio, and Stitcher; you can follow the RSS feed; you can download directly; or you can listen right here.

Tune in next week as we change things up a little bit and talk about Netflix’s acclaimed film Mudbound.

We Are Entertained: ‘The Commuter’ https://geekdad.com/2018/01/we-are-entertained-the-commuter/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-the-commuter Sat, 27 Jan 2018 13:00:35 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=287285 We Are Entertained - The Commuter

We weren’t sure how this week was going to turn out. When you pick the featured movie specifically because you know it won’t be nominated for an Oscar, you’re really rolling the dice. Things worked out pretty well, however, and we actually enjoyed The Commuter aka “Taken on a Train.” Tune in and let us know if you agree with our take on this Liam Neeson vehicle. (See what I did there? :P)

Chris turns back the clock and watches a relic from his childhood with the family. In this film, a young boy joins a band of dwarves on a jaunty adventure in search of treasure. No, we’re not talking about The Hobbit! This one is so much better, and with a frame rate that won’t give you a headache! Of course it’s  the classic time-travel film Time Bandits! Wow, what a journey back in time. Thanks, Filmstruck!

Matt takes a slightly different angle and checks out a movie from way back in 2014 called Chef. Without spoiling too much of the film, it’s easy enough to say that Matt is kicking himself for not having seen this one sooner and Chris was tempted to watch it as soon as this episode was in the can. Matt thinks it may be the best movie he’s seen so far this year. What do you think? Either way, you have to check out the soundtrack. It’s phenomenal!

This week’s show is just full of delight. Delightful ramblings, delightful performances, delightful cinematic experiences. Just delightful! It might be a difficult ask in this busy award show season, but if it’s playing in your local cinema you have absolutely got to get out and see The Shape of Water. It’s going to get nominations, it’s going to be talked about, it’s going to be on your short list of favorite movies this year. Trust me. It’s delightful. Did I say delightful? Speaking of delightful, don’t forget our awesome Darkest Hour giveaway! Free stuff is absolutely delightful!

Chris kicks things off with a 2-for-1 special. He talked about the pilot of Amazon’s newest series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and we finally get the payoff as he shares the results of his marvelous binge of the full series. If you’ll recall, he predicted it was going to be fantastic way back when and it’s getting a whole lot of hype–does it live up to all of its promise?

Speaking of marvelous, Chris rambles in his typical rambly fashion and breaks all of the rules by giving us a second taste of his entertaining weekend. The long and short of it is that he has discovered a new band and hopes they will soon become a favorite of yours as well. There’s nothing like meandering down a dark and wintry street and hearing a wailing trumpet from a dive bar to inspire you to break the rules. Please, for the love of all that’s holy, check out Petunia and the Vipers and let us know what you think.

Matt continues his quest to see every movie named after a Paul Simon song and shares his experience watching The Only Living Boy in New York with us this week. Matt describes this artful project by one of his favorite directors, Mark Webb, and manages to intrigue us without spoiling the movie’s twisting and turning plot. You might be surprised at his take on another of Webb’s well-known works, 500 Days of Summer.

We Are Entertained: ‘Lady Bird’ (Plus a ‘Darkest Hour’ Giveaway!) https://geekdad.com/2017/12/we-are-entertained-lady-bird-plus-a-darkest-hour-giveaway/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-lady-bird-plus-a-darkest-hour-giveaway Fri, 15 Dec 2017 15:45:58 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=272878 We Are Entertained-Ladybird

This week is a wild romp through the world of cinema. A mysterious natural disaster forces Chris out of the theater early during our featured film Lady Bird but he makes up for missing the ending by getting into an early screener of Darkest Hour. What can we say about Lady Bird that hasn’t already been said in the record number of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes? We can only hope that there isn’t the kind of backlash against the rave reviews of this fantastic film that keeps butts out of seats. This is a special film and Saoirse “Like Inertia” Ronan delivers a delicate and nuanced performance that is sure to put her in the running for everything this award season.

The end result of all this is a net win for you, dear listeners, as we are lucky enough to offer you a podcast exclusive GeekDad giveaway!

We kick things off this week with Chris talking about his experience at a local screening of Darkest Hour. Not only is he able to share the delightful story of being adopted as an honorary movie-grandson but he is in full “urge you to see this film” mode as he gushes over the film.

Seriously, listen to our episode but I’m not about to hold back on recommending it – go see this film as soon as it’s in your local theater. Gary Oldman got himself a case of nicotine poisoning filming this movie and he still wants you to go see it. Do it for Gary, if not for @entertainedcast. If that isn’t enough incentive, we’re doing a cigar and whisky related giveaway (in as much as anything about this movie is cigar and whisky related) so make sure you enter to win!

Richard tries to confuse us by sharing his experience seeing a ghost story called A Ghost Story. Confusing, right? Casey Affleck takes on the immensely challenging role of, “Guy With Sheet Over His Head,” and the result is a film Richard argues everyone must see. How did we miss this one?

Matt rounds the last mark and takes one for the team watching the legendarily bad cult-classic The Room. Without giving too much away, Matt is an old, grumpy man that doesn’t understand young people today. This ain’t no Birdemic: Shock and Terror. If you’re wondering whether or not you need to see this film (can we call it that) before you check out alleged Oscar contender The Disaster Artist you need to hear Matt’s hot take.

And now, finally, the giveaway details you’ve all been waiting for! We have the opportunity to give one lucky fan a fantastic Darkest Hour prize pack. The film is available in select theaters now and will open into wide release on December 22nd. Seriously, folks, this is a great film and you should go see it in the theater. If my recommendation isn’t enough, please let me ply you with these fantastic giveaways:

  • A set of 4 Darkest Hour coasters upon which you can set your morning whiskey whilst your smoke the days first cigar (see, I told you it was cigar and whiskey related!)
Darkest Hour Coaster Giveaway
Perfect for your whiskey glass
Darkest Hour Book Giveaway
Darkest Hour book by Anthony McCarten

You can’t win if you don’t enter! We’ll run the giveaway through the opening weekend of December 22nd, make sure you tell your friends!!!

We Are Entertained: ‘Coco’ https://geekdad.com/2017/12/we-are-entertained-coco/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-coco Fri, 01 Dec 2017 18:00:10 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=271008 We Are Entertained - Coco

This week the boys feasted on Pixar’s latest animated wonder Coco. Much like the actual theater experience, if all you’re interested in is hearing what they thought, feel free to fast-forward through the insufferable Disney/Frozen nonsense at the beginning. Bonus points if you can guess which of us got up and walked out of the theater to complain about the wrong movie being played!

Richard kicks things off this week by revisiting a movie that we all wanted to watch back in 2015 but somehow just forgot about. Could it be cooking show burnout that turned us away? Or did we just assume we were the wrong audience for this discount Matthew McConaughey aka Bradley Cooper culinary masterpiece? Do you remember this one? Did you see it? Was there Oscar buzz? Listen in and find out what Richard thought about it!

Matt and Chris collided in the maelström of Netflix’s algorithms this week and both checked out a movie with a title as bizarre as the IMDB cast list in Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring A Very Special Contractually Obligated Mention Of Tony Clifton. This film is a meta-documentary which follows Jim Carrey into a warped method acting black hole during his portrayal of Andy Kaufman in the 1999 Kaufman documentary Man on the Moon. The movie winds up being as much a biography of Carrey’s career in film as it is a case study in what diving deep into another person’s life can do to your psyche. In the end, neither of us were quite sure what we watched. Have you seen it? Let us know what you think!

Finally, we get to this week’s feature, Coco. This is one of those rare episodes where everyone (spoiler alert) absolutely loved the film, and that freed the conversation to take wild and wooly turns that have to be heard to be believed. There are certainly mild spoilers, and the payoff is good enough that you should definitely watch the film before you listen just to prevent anything from being taken away from the experience. Bonus celebrity crush news–Chris got to meet Jaime Camil who voices Papá in Coco a few weeks ago at a Nascar race (of all places) and got a picture to prove it!

Stay tuned for next week’s show on Ladybird!

We Are Entertained: ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ https://geekdad.com/2017/11/we-are-entertained-murder-on-the-orient-express/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=we-are-entertained-murder-on-the-orient-express Fri, 24 Nov 2017 17:00:10 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=269842 We Are Entertained - Murder on the Orient Express

We really missed Richard this week. Why does he have to spend so much time actually making movies instead of sitting around talking about them?! Join us as we dive into the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and struggle mightily to pronounce the name of the miraculously mustachioed hero Hercule Poirot. Also, apparently, Chris doesn’t know who Kenneth Branagh is? Strange.

Chris kicks things off on this week’s show by talking about another awesome audiobook from Audible. It’s called Artemis and it’s the newest offering by Andy Weir of The Martian fame. Not only is Artemis a fantastic read by a fantastic writer but it’s voiced in an absolutely masterful performance by Rosario Dawson. If you’re at all on the fence about listening to this book after listening to the show this week, check out GeekDad Jaime’s piece, “Please, Let Rosario Dawson Read Artemis to You.” You can also read a great review of the book in GeekDad James’ piece, “Andy Weir Returns to Tech-Fiction with Artemis.” If it’s not immediately obvious, the GeekDads loved this book.

Matt finally gives in to the irresistible pressure of Netflix’s Stranger Things season 2. (Is that Strangerer Things?) It’s interesting–almost everyone we know dove in and binged it the day it was released, but these two knuckleheads have been putting it off. Why, you might ask? Listen to the show. We might answer.

Finally, the boys talk about their relationship with Agatha Christie (spoiler alert, one of them doesn’t really have one) and what they were expecting from Murder on the Orient Express. I think it’s safe to say that they were both surprised when they walked out of the theater. Whatever you thought of the film, I think everyone can agree on at least one thing; Kenneth Branagh’s mustache is a thing of epic beauty.

Stay tuned next week for Justice League!
