The first of these was a range of Star Wars Force Link toys that use wearable tech that sense when the related Star Wars figures and ships are held in the hand. It then plays lights and sound to augment the play.

Then there was the new Sphero BB-9E and R2-D2 app controlled droids. These follow up the ever popular Sphero BB-8 for The Last Jedi and look to be just as popular.

Finally, we had hands on time with the new Augmented Reality Jedi Challenges experience. This uses a Lenovo AR Helmet that houses a smartphone to create a surprisingly impressive AR experience. We played the Lightsaber battles and it worked well for the whole family.

Not only did the tech respond quickly to my boys jumping around to battle Darth Vader in augmented reality but the kit itself also felt really good to hold. The Lightsaber has a light up end — not dissimilar to a Move controller — and you place a glowing globe in the room to help the game orient itself.

It also offers a strategic combat game that has you marshaling the forces of the Republic, Rebel Alliance, and Resistance on the living room floor to battle the Separatists, Empire, and First Order. Then there is Holochess, that recreates the game first seen on the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Hasbro’s ‘Hanazuki’ YouTube Cartoon Gets Wearable Tech and Collectibles https://geekdad.com/2017/05/hasbros-hanazuki-youtube-cartoon-gets-wearable-tech-and-collectibles/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hasbros-hanazuki-youtube-cartoon-gets-wearable-tech-and-collectibles Wed, 10 May 2017 18:00:25 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=244757 Hanazuki is the YouTube-published cartoon from Hasbro that features their rising star, Hanazuki. She might look like many other cute girl heroes but she is actually quite different. Hanazuki, both the show and the character, focus on being able to understand and work with a wide range of emotions — not just the easy ones like fun or happy, but sad and angry too.

The show has been out for a while but this month the app was released. We had early access to the toys that support the app and the show. Along with being a collectible toy-line, the Hanazuki range can all be scanned into the app to unlock characters like Skylanders.

This is a simpler game, of course, aimed at a younger demographic, but the collecting instinct is the same. In addition to the general toys (small plastic mini-characters and plush dolls) there is a Moodgleam smart-band. This connects to the app vie bluetooth and lights up different colors depending on what mood the character is in.

You can attach the collectible characters to the watch to change the current emotion of the game world — unlocking bonuses and gaining boosts. The watch is also used to extend the experience of the app by flashing different colors to highlight action on the screen — not unlike a Dualshock 4, actually.

The show itself will be getting more Hanazuki episodes on YouTube (also in the app) on May 19th. There has also been a second season confirmed for 2018.

‘Air Hogs Connect’ Combines Drones and Games https://geekdad.com/2016/09/air-hogs-connect/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=air-hogs-connect Fri, 23 Sep 2016 10:00:40 +0000 https://geekdad.com/?p=215312 Air Hogs Connect is an unusual and interesting combination of physical drones and a tablet-based video game. Players control a real-world drone as they progress through an AR video game experience on the screen.

This drones-to-life experience sounds a little odd at first, but, after being set-up with a test version of the game in my family, the boys took to it quickly. Because the drone flies in the real world, the video game inherits these life-like physics for the on-screen ship. Equally, the video game progression and missions serve to extend the interest and lifespan of the physical drone.

Through a series of rescue missions and flying challenges you earn points and unlock in-game enhancements to the performance of your vehicle. Gameplay is pretty diverse as players learn to grapple civilians to safety, put out fires, or tactically drop troops to attack enemies.

We’ve just got started with a demo version of the game in my family so it’s early days, but already my teenage boys are pretty hooked.
